Mira Road Residents Experience The Bliss of The Festival of Chariots

Mira Road Residents Experience The Bliss of The Festival of Chariots

On Sunday, July 29, 2014; ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) Mira Road celebrated Ratha Yatra (Festival of Chariots). Congregation of all the three temples (ISKCON Juhu, ISKCON Chwopatty & ISKCON Kharghar)
had participated in the celebration.

The Ratha Yatra procession of Lord Jagannatha, Lady Subhadra, and Lord Baladeva respectively started in the afternoon from ISKCON Mira Road Temple. The colorful chariots were gloriously decorated.

Jagannatha represents the Lord of the Universe and is simultaneously the same as Lord Krishna. The ecstatic senior devotees and several hundred devotees chanted Hare Krishna Mahamantra (Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare; Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare), and glorified Lord’s names. Devotees pulled the ropes of the chariots with great enthusiasm and devotion.

About 2000 devotees enjoyed the parade, the festival, and free prasadam (pure vegetarian food offered to the Lord). The first Ratha Yatra of ISKCON was held in mid 1960s in San Francisco, and since then ISKCON has been celebrating it every year. This celebration is performed in many cities all around the world.

Many people who do not or cannot come to the Temple recieve the mercy of the Lord Jagannath when he comes out with His sister Subhadra, and brother Balarama to bless all. ISKCON was founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in mid 1960s in New York. There are many ISKCON temples in the U.S., and in other countries including India.

Jagannath Snana Yatra at ISKCON Miraroad

Jagannath Snana Yatra at ISKCON Miraroad

Like every year this festival of Snana Yatra was celebrated with huge glory at ISKCON Mira Road. This festival marks the countdown for Rathyatra. On the eve of the Snana Yatra (which means the Bathing festival, in Sanskrit), the deities are brought out in a grand procession from the garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) to the Snana Bedi (bathing platform). Devotees come to view the deities.

On the day of the Snana Yatra, the deities are bathed with 108 pots, of ritually purified water. At the conclusion of the bathing ritual, Jagannath and Balabhadra are dressed up in elephant headgear representing the God Ganesh. This form of the God is called the 'Gajavesha'.

After the Snana Yatra the Lords are traditionally believed to fall ill and are kept in a sick room to recuperate in privacy under the care of the Raj Vaidya. During this period known as Anavsara the Gods cannot be seen by devotees. It is said that with the Ayurvedic medication ('pnachan') administered by the Raj Vaidya the Gods recover in a fortnight and resume giving darshan to their devotees.

Gaura Purnima is the auspicious appearance day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and this year we celebrated the 528th anniversary of His appearance on March 16, 2014.

The Supreme Lord Sri Krishna appeared as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to establish Sankirtana Movement – the yuga dharma for this age. He appeared on Phalguni Purnima (the full moon day in the month of Phalguna) in the year 1486 AD (1407 Shakabda) at Sridham Mayapura as the son of Sri Jagannath Mishra and Srimati Sachidevi. His parents named him Nimai since the child was born under a nimba (neem) tree in the courtyard of His paternal house. His appearance day is celebrated as Gaura Purnima. On this day, devotees fast till moon rise.

At ISKCON Mira Road, the festival starts at 6:00 PM. View pictures to see the glimpses of the festival.
